Advanced: test an upload limit

Enter the byte limit above, then choose one byte below, the exact limit or one byte above. Each choice uses the same base: 15,728,640 B. Generate and download each file to test your endpoint.

Where a 15 MB PDF comes up

  • Testing portals that advertise a "maximum 15 MB" document upload, often for application or claim forms.
  • Showing users why a PDF that is "only 15 MB" still bounces from a 20 MB mailbox.
  • Checking that a document viewer stays responsive when the file is several times larger than a typical scan.

Limits it lands on

  • If a form means 15 MB as 15,000,000 bytes, this 15 MiB file is 728,640 bytes too large, about 4.9% over.
  • Base64 encoding for email turns it into roughly 20.97 million bytes, so it no longer fits a 20 MB message limit such as Outlook's default for internet accounts.
  • It passes Telegram's 20 MB getFile limit for bots but is over the 10 MB payload cap of API Gateway REST APIs.

What is inside the file

A single A4 page with two lines of Helvetica text. The page itself needs 722 bytes; a 15,727,918-byte stream that no page references carries the rest.

The cross-reference table and startxref value point to the real offsets, so viewers jump straight to the page without reading the filler.

Questions

Why does a 15 MB form reject this 15 MB PDF?

Because the file is 15 MiB (15,728,640 bytes). A limit written as 15,000,000 bytes is smaller. Switch the generator to decimal MB to create a file of exactly 15,000,000 bytes.

Will compressing the PDF make it smaller?

Yes. The padding is a run of identical characters, so any PDF optimiser that recompresses or drops unused objects will shrink it to a few kilobytes.
