What is a PNG file?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format built for graphics that need pixel-perfect edges and transparency — logos, screenshots, icons, diagrams. Every pixel survives the save; nothing is approximated the way JPEG does. The tradeoff is file size: a PNG of a photograph is usually much larger than the same photograph saved as JPEG or WebP.

What is a WEBP file?

WebP is Google's 2010 image format, built to replace both JPEG and PNG at once — it supports lossy compression like JPEG, lossless compression like PNG, and transparency, all in one container. At equivalent visual quality it typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPEG or PNG. Every major browser has supported it since 2020.

How it works

  1. Drop your PNG file into the box above, or click to choose one.
  2. Your browser converts it to WEBP instantly, using its own image engine — nothing is sent anywhere.
  3. Download the WEBP file. That's it.

Questions.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — your PNG file never leaves your device.

Will converting to WEBP reduce quality?

No — WebP supports lossless compression, so you can keep exact pixel-for-pixel quality while cutting file size. If you don't need lossless, the default lossy WebP setting still looks close to identical at a fraction of the size.

Is there a file size limit?

No limit is enforced by the tool itself — the practical ceiling is your browser's available memory, which handles typical photos and graphics easily.

Is this really free?

Yes — every format conversion on ByteRivet is free, with no account, watermark or daily limit.
