Advanced: test an upload limit

Enter the byte limit above, then choose one byte below, the exact limit or one byte above. Each choice uses the same base: 8,388,608 B. Generate and download each file to test your endpoint.

Where a 8 MB PDF comes up

  • Reproducing the confusing case where a PHP form submits but $_FILES and $_POST arrive empty.
  • Testing mail flows where an 8 MB attachment no longer fits a default Postfix relay.
  • Checking upload progress bars and timeouts on slower connections with a meaningful file.

Limits it lands on

  • PHP: post_max_size defaults to 8M. This file plus the multipart envelope is larger, and PHP discards the whole body without a visible error on the page.
  • Postfix: encoded, the attachment is around 11.2 million bytes, above the default message_size_limit of 10,240,000 bytes.

What is inside the file

The hidden stream is 8,387,888 bytes long, and the startxref pointer is written after it so the file stays structurally valid.

pypdf reports one page and no encryption, which makes it a predictable fixture in parser tests.

Questions

Why are $_POST and $_FILES empty?

When a request exceeds post_max_size PHP drops all form data and only logs a warning. Check $_SERVER["CONTENT_LENGTH"] to detect it.

Is this the same as the 8 MB JPG?

Same byte count, different format: this one is a single-page PDF, the JPG is an 800 × 600 photo with padding segments.
