What is a JPG file?
JPEG (or JPG) is the format most cameras and phones save photos in. It compresses by discarding detail the eye is least likely to notice, which keeps file sizes small at the cost of being lossy — save the same file repeatedly and quality degrades a little each time. It has no transparency channel.
What is a WEBP file?
WebP is Google's 2010 image format, built to replace both JPEG and PNG at once — it supports lossy compression like JPEG, lossless compression like PNG, and transparency, all in one container. At equivalent visual quality it typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPEG or PNG. Every major browser has supported it since 2020.
How it works
- Drop your JPG file into the box above, or click to choose one.
- Your browser converts it to WEBP instantly, using its own image engine — nothing is sent anywhere.
- Download the WEBP file. That's it.

Questions.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — your JPG file never leaves your device.
Will converting to WEBP reduce quality?
Usually not noticeably — WebP's lossy mode matches JPEG quality at roughly 25–35% smaller file sizes. WebP's lossless mode is also available if you want a pixel-perfect result instead, at a larger file size.
Is there a file size limit?
No limit is enforced by the tool itself — the practical ceiling is your browser's available memory, which handles typical photos and graphics easily.
Is this really free?
Yes — every format conversion on ByteRivet is free, with no account, watermark or daily limit.
